Iran Reacts to Death of Pope Francis


Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a message of condolence following the death of Pope Francis, praising the late pontiff’s humanitarian values and his commitment to peace and justice.

The pope, who passed away at the age of 88, left behind a legacy defined by his outspoken advocacy for interfaith dialogue and his efforts to address global human rights issues.

In his statement, Pezeshkian extended condolences to Catholics and Pope Francis’s followers worldwide. “I offer condolences on the passing of Pope Francis to all Catholics worldwide and his followers,” Pezeshkian wrote. “Pope Francis dedicated his life to promoting Christ’s teachings of peace, justice, freedom, and interfaith dialogue.”

Humanitarian Legacy

The Iranian President also highlighted Pope Francis‘s stance on humanitarian issues. “Among the highlights of his life and leadership were his humanitarian positions against anti-human behaviors in the world, especially his explicit positions and condemnation of the Israeli regime’s genocide in Gaza, and the demand to end the killing of innocent Palestinian women and children.”

In November 2024, Francis urged a careful investigation into allegations of genocide over Israel’s actions in the Strip, where it has been at war with Iran-backed Hamas since its October 2023 attack on Israel.

Vatican’s Announcement

Pope Francis died was hospitalized for weeks earlier this year. His death on Monday, was announced by the Vatican after his public appearance the day before.
